Read Oceanus. It's a hard subject, I think everyone should read it and teach themselves how they should play this game.

I think after the banlist in march before the armageddon expo in april, we have some learning to do to make sure Dunedin represents.

Get together and do a shit load of trial duals against decklists we can expect to bump into at the expo. That way we can get used to the new format, and adjust decklists and side decks appropriately.

Link number 1

No monster that requires a Normal Summon will ever be considered a side deck staple.

The point of the side deck is to change the defense of your deck to better fight the opponent, not to interrupt your offensive line-up and speed, thus consistency.

If you want to side in such cards for effect or ATK purposes, IMO you should reconsider the deck you're playing because what you're trying to do is create general anti-meta with your deck, but what you get is a half-ass'd version of Anti-Meta and your archetype that doesn't do either very well in hopes that luck will have it that your deck either stomps the next round with the archetype, or you instead draw a string of anti-meta to beat down the opponent. Both are rolls of a die hopes.

If you want to make anti-meta or anti-meta archetype, just do it instead of experimenting mid-match with what is essentially hasty deckbuilding.

And number 2 for noobs.

I want the side deck discussed and everybody to get behind a theory for it, because for a decade I've seen many tops of tournaments with randy sidedecks that are mostly a joke that if sided in would hurt the player more than help. In fact sometimes they side out key consistency elements to side in a card that further hurts the consistency with its effect (even if slightly) like TKR-Oh/DCKnight ._.

My theory is to not make your deck necessarily become a one-for-one beatstick like the olden days because just running that deck would be a simpler plan that gives much more space.

The sidedeck has barely enough room to change true strategies, but then you'd have no room of course for any real match-ups. So keep your goal always in mind. We 40 cards and while there are archetypes and dual archetypes, nobody can really fit more than that into a consistent deck.

Some decks like SixSam IMO doesn't have much room to side at all without crunching consistency with the overall feel of the deck, but I would side variant SixSams that don't make it into the main deck that help out in other situations. Against any deck, I want my SixSam be able to continue its goal. Something getting in the way of that goal influences my room for removal options. Because if my siding allows me to play my deck like it normally does, I have significant testing saying I will be successful . At least more successful than the anti-meta g3's we see too much where players are practically gambling on their one-for-one's hitting the right cards.

The bulk of controversy I have to offer about the side deck is just that I want the side deck to deal with problems less specifically. Not completely, but my side has for a long time been filled with general removal that works around many decks instead of cards that only work against one deck. Cards like "D.D. Crow," "Twister," "Compulsory Evacuation Device," etc.

An interesting corollary to this is "Puppet Plant". It does not fit any generic sense into the thought of being usable against a variety of decks. You see it, you're playing against SixSam :/. So technically if I ran it it would only be a part of a minority of the specific side of my side deck. The only reason I would side it is if the generic side stands no chance of dealing with the new threat of SixSam. If PPlant does something so extravagant in this match-up that generic sides can't handle, this is a plausible solution (although I'm no where near sure enough right now PPlant is necessary to this degree). I saw this thought with myself against burn. When the opposing strategy has been so different as to be focused on a strange goal we're not use to playing, we have to have specific changes to how we defend.

The overall goal of the generic side is to be able to aptly have a back-up plan against anything you run into throughout the tournament— not just 1-2 decks with specific cards and specific strategies because this overtime has influenced the anti-meta switching sides players have today that fight awkwardly trying to counter each others' strategy when neither even has one (due to the consistency switch choices they unfortunately make, sometimes their opening hand and even game win looks NOTHING like the deck they entered the tournament with).

So for direct comment:

Sabers do have an extremely powerful base that isn't too huge, so I can see what you're saying as they have room for extra anti-meta pieces. Tele-DAD also was a very general deck that wasn't even on an archetypal level like Sabers, so they have tons of room to change the ability of their deck without disrupting the activation of a Spell Card and the SS of a monster to synch with .

However, I never understood TKR-Oh in GB's. I'm not a big GB player, but can't see the sense behind

1) Using a Normal Summon for the purpose of no set-up, but only at an attempt to gamble with slowing down gameplay so that... So that you have time to overcommit to the field? That's of course if you don't top Training Ground. What a plan.
2) Putting a card into play that practically does nothing for your strategy being put into play, grave'd, RFP'd, hiding in the deck, etc.
3) Like I mentioned, a card possibly hindering your own abilities just to stop your opponent.

3 reminds me of you brining of ROppression. This can be an anti-meta card, but in god's name it god limited because it wasn't anymore, it became outright removal! Every deck ran this card because the two possible outcomes to it would that you either commit to the field and then lockdown your opponent to counter assault, or you would slow down the game to an equal ground where you had the opportunity to make a come back. Usually the outcome was the former because of how much control you had over when you activated it and how focused decks were on dealing with threats with SSs of their own.

The last points I seem to have interwoven into this post, so I'll stop here . Except to offer a challenge to you to let your opponent crap up their decklist and take an offensive approach to siding. Keep your strategy, and work in ways to deal with your opponent's siding cards that overall your opponent's broken inconsistent offense has no defense to hide behind. It is here where your deck keeps its normal plays, and tries to find the opportunity to push over the opponent and take a hands down win.
